Decide in advance: What is worth fighting for?
What is non-negotiable? Where do you draw that line.
- Be aware of your surroundings
Typically known as “situational awareness” make sure you know what’s going on around you. Bad guys are just waiting for that person who doesn’t have a clue what is going on around them because they will be an easier target.
- Get off your phone
Is that phone call or text as important as your safety? Wait until you are in your vehicle with the doors locked.
Always keep your phone handy to call for help if needed, but don’t be so tied to it that you are not aware of what is going on around you.
- Lock the door behind you
Make it a habit to lock your door(s) immediately.
Often the bad guys will wait until you think you are safe and relax your guard, then they will open the door.
- Park Safely
Choose spots that are well-lit. Park close to the entrances of buildings (less time walking thru the parking lot) be aware of others loitering near your parking spot. When loading the trunk do so as quickly as possible.
Keep your keys handy. Do not fumble in your pocket or purse for them.
- Speak Up
Do not be afraid to speak to someone to ask them to not come closer if approaching you in a parking lot. Speak loudly to gain the attention of others.
Scream, Yell, Command – Use your voice.
